The Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone is a compression and sustain pedal with blend (wet/dry mix) and simple EQ controls built into a "mini" stompbox casing. It runs an analog circuit with true bypass making it a good fit for electric and acoustic guitars alike.

As with most mini guitar pedals, the Philosopher's Tone runs off a 9V DC power supply.
Compressors can help smooth out your playing and take some of the peaks and lows of volume/gain out of your signal. A lot of compressors are ran as rackmount units, but for simpler rigs a pedal like this one works fine. It's a good thing to have but not a necessity unless you do a lot of recording.
Pigtronix got started as a boutique brand but have quickly grown into a more mainstream pedal company. They're in most major musical instrument retailer catalogs, including Sweewater.
There are cheaper compressors out there, but the blend knob on the Philosopher's tone is somewhat unique, and it's also nice to have an analog circuit. At this price point, the Philosopher's tone is a decent option, even if it might not be the absolute best option.
