The Best Hughes & Kettner Amp Overall?
Hughes & Kettner GrandMeister Deluxe 40
The GrandMeister is like the kingpin of the H&K lineup, with a ton of onboard tube flexibility and digital features, including effects (modulation and reverb), 128 presets, and even a mobile app for control. With the zero wattage feature, you don't even need a speaker load. You can just use the emulated speaker output and send it wherever you'd like.

BEST FOR: Studio and recording, playing live, playing at lower volumes (power soak feature), playing without a speaker cab, modern playing styles, amp-based distortion, and flexibility.

- Just a ton of digital tech with a tube circuit. A beautifully flexibility combination.
- Zero wattage mode and speaker emulated output (Red Box) makes a speaker cab not necessary. Just set it to zero wattage and send the signal to a PA or interface.
- More presets than you could ever possibly use.
- Mobile app for dials. Crazy that we have this technology integrated with tube amps.
- Probably not ideal for a purist in the tube amp market.
- Not much else to complain about, given the price.
Why I like the Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 40
This is truly one of the most complete amplifiers on the market, and a very happy medium between what we love about tube amps and solid state amps. The Black Spirit from Hughes & Kettner is another one I really like, especially if you want to get in at a lower price tag. But the GrandMeister is an ideal combination of digital flexibility and tube purity, that can be really helpful for a wide range of scenarios. If you're settled on the Hughes & Kettner brand, this is easily my top recommendation.

How I Make Amp Recommendations
When I'm making a recommendation within a brand, the process is much easier. I'm simply looking for the highest possible quality at the lowest possible price (best value) from within that brand. I'm also focusing on amps that I've had experience with, or that I can verify with someone else who has first-hand experience. All of the recommendations are made based on the brands we trust and the features that matter most. If you have questions about our methodology, please feel free to ask.
Compare More Amps
You can compare other Hughes & Kettner amps to the GrandMeister by searching for them here and adding them to the comparison bar at the bottom of this page. There are plenty of other brands and models as well. We don't have everything, but we have a lot, and are adding to it regularly.
