Compare More Electric Guitars
You can compare more electric guitars by using this search function and adding them to the compare bar which will show up at the bottom of this page. We're adding to our database of guitar gear regularly.
Major similarities and differences
Gibson SGs us a pretty standard recipe, namely the following:
- Gibson brand humbuckers (Burstbucker, 490, etc.)
- Mahogany body
- Mahogany neck
- Same body design
Within the Gibson brand, the pickups will vary, and it's up to you to decide how you want to approach the nuanced differences between them. But within a similar body construction, there will be less of a difference than if you were dealing with different Gibson pickups in two completely different guitars.
A more significant difference is the bridge hardware. You have a Maestro Vibrola, a sideways Vibrola, and then the more traditional wraparound style.
This is the ABR-1 tune-o-matic bridge that we see on a lot of Gibson guitars.
Tuning machines will change between models too, but other than the bridge hardware and humbuckers, the differences are usually pretty subtle.
Features to keep an eye on
Here's a quick list of all the features we think you should keep an eye on when you're browsing Gibson SG electrics:
- Make sure to note the difference between Gibson and Epiphone (Epiphone's are dramatically cheaper)
- Note the bridge hardware (usually Vibrola or traditional ABR-1)
- Note the type of humbuckers and/or pickup configuration (usually two in an HH configuration)
- Expect a Mahogany body
- Look at the quality of the finish (Murphy Lab, VOS, Gloss Nitrocellulose Lacquer)
- Tuning hardware
Measurements are always really close. Scale length is usually 24.75 inches and nut width is around 1.68 or 1.69 inches.
